Gavin Bellinger is the first to call his business a dive bar. The tiny space is unpretentious, gritty and in Bellinger’s words, “totally lo-fi”.

Graffiti and tattoo-like murals cover the black walls, booths are adorned with shredded stickers and converted beer kegs make for tables. The bartenders, though knowledgeable and gregarious, look perpetually hungover.

The breakfast and lunch trade is steady. Local office workers drop by for the no-fuss single origins from Five Senses – you won’t find cold-press contraptions or filter coffees here – or the equally fuss-free food, such as wraps and bacon cheeseburgers.

When the sun goes down, Double Double cranks up. With room for just 40, it fills fast. Most come for the bar’s extensive rum collection (25 and counting) and drink Dark and Stormies, Mai Tais and, Gavin’s favourite, the Rum Old Fashioneds. Just don’t overlook the beer and wine lists – they definitely hold their own.

Double Double’s monthly events draw the biggest crowds. There’s open-mic nights, speed dating and beer pong.
