It’s hard to believe Sprolo was once a car-parts shop. These days, rev heads have been replaced by coffee lovers, who congregate in the perennially abuzz space strewn with music paraphernalia. Blacklist Coffee Roasters roasts out back, where the workshop once was.

Whatever your favourite method, chances are it’s here. With Chemex, Aeropress, a filter bar and a bottled cold brew available during the hotter months, Sprolo is coffee-nerd heaven.

The best way to sample the shop’s one blend and two rotating single origins is with a tasting flight. Roaster and co-owner Gabriel Tan knows his stuff and will happily talk you through a tasting. He’s a licensed Q grader, which involves passing 22 tests to become an industry-recognised taster and bean grader.

Though Sprolo’s food offering competently spans savoury and sweet, what leaves the kitchen most often is the Singapore Breakfast. A twist on the island nation’s morning fare, the normally soft-boiled eggs are cooked sous vide, and the usual fluffy toast has been given a sourdough upgrade.

However it’s the kaya coconut jam that’s the star. Made in house, it’s smooth, sweet and creamy and available in jars to take home.

With ample parking, a toy corner and changing facilities, Sprolo is also family friendly.
