As owners of both pubs and restaurants, Donnacha Reidy and Matthew Barge clocked up plenty of time in the Sydney hospitality scene. But after selling their respective venues and moving west for a break, they decided to join forces. Their first venture together sees Nedlands’ Byrneleigh Hotel reborn as The Resident, a bar owned by Reidy and managed by Barge.
Barge oversees the rotating wine list, which focuses on labels that have been certified organic. The list features six whites and six reds. The beer offering also changes constantly and sports a bias for boutique brewers. The tightly clipped cocktail menu – just four to begin with – has been earmarked for expansion.
The vegan- and vegetarian-friendly menu reflects customer demand, with lighter, healthier options than standard pub grub.
The Little Resident, a cafe serving coffee from Bibra Lake roaster Backyard Coffee, sandwiches and cakes, is accessible via a separate entrance to the right of the venue. The spin-off cafe is open daily from 6.30am.
