Rice Baby’s owners did plenty of research before opening in late 2016. They hit all the best dumpling spots in Melbourne and Sydney first, then travelled to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taiwan.
It’s no surprise, then, that dumplings are a must here. Both pan-fried and steamed are available, with traditional fillings including vegetarian, pork, chicken or seafood. Pair your fix with the DIY roast duck bao, bang bang chicken, beef rendang and for dessert, liquid-centred matcha lava cakes, all prepared by chef Cara Lim.
As at sister restaurant Miss Chow’s in Claremont, there’s also a strong cocktail program. Expect mixtures on the sweeter side and ingredients such as lychee, lemongrass and chilli. Asahi Super Dry, Soukai (a mid-strength) and Dry Black are all on tap.
The ample seating makes Rice Baby an easy pick for large group bookings; and it’s ideal for everyone, of any age, for any occasion. In addition to its normal trading hours, the restaurant opens for every AFL game at Subiaco.
