Kakulas Bros

Since its founding in 1929, Kakulas Brothers hasn’t changed much. But nowadays, the continental store is run by the next generation, cousins Evan and George Kakulas.

The wooden floorboards still creak with bags of chickpeas and dried fruit, but the range is now thoroughly global. Grab an in-house roasted coffee from the little window and take your time browsing the maze of exotic foods – that hard-to-find ingredient will be somewhere in here (or perhaps at one of the family's other grocery stores, Kakulas Sister in Fremantle and Nollamara).

Olive and cheese fiends will love the deli, and the hessian sacks hold anything from fragrant curry powders and spices to goji berries and Turkish delight. It’s a scoop-and-weigh affair, with the open range of foods packing an olfactory punch. The store's website also hosts an online store.

Kakulas is also a good spot for people watching. The shop’s customers range from tourists and students to foodies and grannies, all rubbing shoulders between aisles of steel-cut oats and fish sauce. Just try to walk out empty handed.
