The people of Perth have Sicilian patissier Guiseppe Corica to thank for introducing them to one of the world’s best apple strudels. People have been travelling for the two-foot long Italian dessert since Corica Pastries opened in 1957.
First attracting people from Perth’s Italian and Greek communities, Corica soon gained a new and unpredicted fan base – South-East Asian visitors and expats. They were so numerous and enthusiastic that Corica opened its first Asian store in Indonesia in 2001.
New owner David Bovell was behind the overseas expansion. After Guiseppe passed away his wife Dorothy took over, before selling the much-loved family business to the Bovells in 1998. Renowned for its former meat-pie shop, Bovell Pies, the family was more than equipped to continue Corica’s pastry legacy.
It has continued to use the original strudel recipe. The result is house-stewed apples, whipped cream, custard and a flaky, melt-in-your-mouth pastry. In-store you’ll also find a selection of cakes, pastries and biscuits.
