Scents of Taste might be the only cafe in Perth at which you can leave with a baguette in one hand and a jar of homemade duck confit in the other. Owned and run by two Frenchmen, the cafe is a little slice of their native Toulouse, serving traditional French pastries and simple lunch options.
There’s seating inside and tables outside, where you can enjoy the sun and a palmier or lemon-lime brûlée with your coffee. For lunch there’s beef bourguignon pies, croquemonsieurs and other French sandwiches, such as the paysan, with bacon, onion, leek and mushrooms in a cream sauce.
The croissants, palmiers, eclairs and tarts are baked fresh each morning with top-quality New Zealand butter (the local stuff doesn’t cut it, apparently). Baguettes are baked twice daily, and the steady stream of regulars adhere to the French way of doing things: stopping by for a morning coffee and croissant, then returning in the afternoon to collect a fresh baguette for dinner.
