The Scotto, as its many loyal devotees call it, is a pub done right. With its unpretentious vibe, sunny terrace and weekly deals, it’s no surprise it draws a diverse crowd.

On any given day you’ll spy tattooed Mount Lawley types, penny-pinching students and punks drinking beers alongside folks old enough to be their grandparents. It’s even the unofficial meet-up spot for Perth’s polyamory scene.

The food is shameless pub grub – nacho pizza, anyone? – but it’s always decent and the chefs are famously accommodating. More impressive is the drinks list that punches way above what’s on offer at the average pub, with beers on tap such as the limited-release Quadraceratops from Brooklyn Brewery.

If you feel like getting more sophisticated, you can move upstairs to Defectors cocktail bar, or out back to the Velvet Lounge, a classier live music venue.

On Mondays, newbies and established comedians trial new material at Infinite Jest. It’s a bit hit or miss, but for just $5, it’s worth heading down for. And on Sundays, you can get a pizza and a pint (or a glass of wine if you’re that way inclined) for $10.

That’s cheaper than most pints in Perth full stop.
