Update Monday September 9, 2024: Just nine months after opening, Smidge Bakery has shut its doors.

In a post on Instagram the venue announced it was abruptly closing. “It is with heavy hearts we must announce the closure of our beloved Lyric Lane storefront from tomorrow … Albeit a lot sooner than expected, we’ve always dreamt of moving into a space of our own: one that is safe, welcoming and chock full of treats. So rest assured – this is not the end of Smidge, it is only the beginning. Although our doors will be closed, wholesale catering and retail services will continue on as we transition in our Smidge journey.”

Commenters lamented that they would soon be without their Smidge fix, particularly the cinnamon scrolls, which have earnt a cult following. While Smidge looks for a new home, its cinny scrolls will still be available at Hear This Coffee House in Morely and Timely Coffees in Bayswater

Gen Walters (Deli’s Continental) runs her hole-in-the-wall bakery with a simple motto in mind: “Built on the need for little treats”. But this small venue offer more than just platitudes, she’s armed with perfectly-produced baked goods.

Smidge’s offering leans wholesome and homely, with plenty of options for those who are vegan or gluten-free. Beef or chickpea and beetroot patties and freshly baked focaccia toasties might be sold alongside pastries and cakes. Other standouts have included gluten-free friands loaded with chocolate chips; cinnamon scrolls coated in smatterings of sticky icing; and zesty lemon tarts with shortcrust pastry, all alongside Walters’s signature thick and chewy choc-chip and salted caramel cookies.

Walters also uses Smidge as a vehicle to support mental health initiatives. The profits from a select baked good go towards a different mental health cause each month, such as Bluebird Mental Health.
