Urban Records
Vinyl devotees, bargain-CD hunters and music aficionados will love Urban Records, the store with a split personality. Up front, all things musical jut from every angle, but as you approach the back, discs merge with books, gifts, homewares and men’s and women’s threads.
The rear section is a separate shop called Urban Depot, which wiggled into owner Andy Montgomery’s shop in 2005. The funky dual space delivers retail nirvana: somewhere that pleases both the gents and the ladies, set on a lively street and open late.
UK-born Montgomery focuses on his range of turntables – he’s got everything from budget makes to professional, handmade units from Austria – and his vinyl collection, which has a similar scope. He stocks reissued oldies, back catalogues and even what he calls “cheesy stuff”: Taylor Swift, Tina Turner and ABBA in the shabby-chic, black-and-yellow-themed surrounds.
His most in-demand album is the seminal, electronic mix-up, The K&D sessions by DJs Kruder and Dorfmeister – a rarity chased by many. He also sells record-player parts, headphones and a wide range of CDs, from commercial hits to jazz, alt and hip-hop. He’s one of a dying breed of retailers to do so.
