Sayers is a Leederville institution, filled to capacity most weekends with breakfast and lunch crowds of all ages. The cafe ticks a lot of boxes: a modern Australian menu that's interesting but not too cheffy, a chilled-out, unpretentious vibe, top notch Five Senses coffee and a pet-friendly courtyard.
Chef Michael Ashurst’s background is in London restaurants, but he nails the fresh, appealing food locals love. The original owners of Sayers have moved on to Sayers Sister in Northbridge, leaving the cafe in the capable hands of Ashurst and co-owner Julie Andrews, who have both been with Sayers since it opened in 2006.
The menu changes seasonally, but retains some favourites the regulars can’t live without: the breakfast potato rösti with poached eggs, bacon, onion jam and spinach, and the spiced-beans tagine with babaganoush and poached egg (available for breakfast and lunch). For something sweet opt for dishes such as saffron doughnuts with lemon custard, chocolate sauce and poached pear.
Lunches include chickpea fritter salad with labneh, eggplant, green beans and toasted almonds, and pan-fried gnocchi with chorizo, roasted pumpkin and Persian fetta. The signature house-blend coffee is a winning accompaniment. Otherwise there’s cold-pressed organic juices.
