There are two peak hours at Pixel Coffee Brewers. From 7.30 to 8.30am (the “coffee rush”) the small cafe swells to capacity. These people recognise Pixel’s coffee as the best in Leederville, with beans from Five Senses and regular guests such as Melbourne’s Proud Mary and Seven Seeds alongside local favourite, Mano e Mano.

Then there’s the “cake rush” from 2pm to 3pm. The layer cakes, in flavours such as white forest or raspberry and lemon, are made in-house by cake queen Annie Sheeve, and topped dramatically with flowers and fruit. Other menu standouts include the açai bowl and a pumpkin pie – a Canadian-inspired breakfast of poached eggs, maple syrup, almonds and pumpkin.

Owners Kaya McCarthy, Juliana Nobre and Jennifer Murray know that to stand out in a coffee suburb like Leederville, detail is everything (see why Pixel is such an appropriate name?) and small touches go a long way.

Tables are prettied up with bouquets of fresh flowers the women arrange themselves. It also helps that Nobre and McCarthy are former Western Australian Barista champions, who know how to work their Synesso as well as anyone.

An on-trend vertical garden hangs from the back wall and everywhere you look there’s accents in Tiffany & Co. blue, from footstools and dinosaur planters, to cups and splashback tiles.
