This village-like suburb features some of Perth’s best eating and drinking, alongside several noteworthy independent retailers.

Leederville is one of Perth’s oldest suburbs, but its population didn’t really begin to take off until the early 20th century, when an influx of immigrants (from China in particular) settled in the area. Some beautiful art-deco buildings from that period – including the Luna Cinemas on the corner of Oxford and Vincent Streets – are still standing today.

Near Luna, especially along Carr Place, you’ll find a concentration of some of Perth’s best cafes and casual diners, plus record stores, independent bookshops and boutiques. Everything is clustered within walking distance, giving Leederville a tight-knit village-y feel that’s rare in Australian cities.

This is one of our favourite places to while away an afternoon, often concluding with a stroll around nearby Lake Monger with a gelato in hand.
