Features
Jess Doyle is no stranger to the Perth breakfast scene. She was the first owner of Crumpet in Vic Park – a cafe best known for its housemade crumpets, a rarity at the time.
She returned to Kalamunda, where she grew up, to open Haynes Street Larder with partner Scott North. That short-order health-food cafe lacks its own kitchen, so they added Jack and Jill a few doors up. Between booths, small tables, a breakfast bar and a large communal table, it has plenty of space. Plants in terracotta pots and glass jars add greenery.
The breakfast menu changes every five weeks, to showcase the produce sourced from a grower down the road in Bickley Valley. There’s a few stayers, including the big breakfast; eggs Benedict; and croque monsieur and madame. A specials board lists soups, toasties and burgers available for lunch.
A word of warning: your coffee might feel richer than usual on account of the Grumpy Farmer A2 milk. Coupled with Crema coffee, you can expect a super-creamy cup.
There’s also high-end hot chocolate from Margaret River’s Bahen & Co. Those who aren’t afraid to ramp up the sweetness mustn’t miss the French white chocolate melted with organic coconut milk and vanilla.
