It’s easy to picture the former goings-on around Moore & Moore Cafe. From the main section, the cartway – named for its former use by horses and carts – you can look up to see trapdoors in the wooden ceiling that were originally used to hoist merchandise to the upper storerooms. The bones of the old merchants warehouse remain.

Sitting in the historic Moores Building, which also houses a popular contemporary gallery and event space, Moore & Moore adopts its own appreciation of art with vintage advertising signs and stacks of music-event posters plastered around. Head to the courtyard’s edges to sneak a peek through the glass doors of the artists’ residence and see international visitors at work.

Blackboard menus display a range of healthy options (coeliacs, vegans and vegetarians are well covered) with salads, quiches, wraps and juices. The tea selection is wide-ranging, with black, white and green leaf available with some more unusual drink menu items such as a spiced-pumpkin latte, rooibos latte and iced butterscotch.

Desserts are plentiful, too, with muffins, cakes and slices. By night the cafe turns into a multipurpose event space popular for birthdays, weddings and corporate events. Cafe bookings are available for eight or more.
