Duck Duck Bruce

6:30am - 3:00pm
18 Collie Street Fremantle 6160

Duck Duck Bruce was built out of friendship. A group of mates, all design amateurs, helped the three owners pull the place together in nine days. Charlie and Sean Merry are married; James William Wood (“Woody”) is their best friend. The three have worked in the Perth hospitality business for several years.

The cafe is outfitted with recycled and second-hand furniture. The old standing counter inherited from the previous owner became an eccentric bench with turquoise cushions. A neighbour’s old front door now guards the kitchen entrance. The big dining table comes from Charlie’s own apartment, which was ransacked for the cafe. The little turquoise tables and stencilled monstera leaves are elegant and simple, allowing the focus to stay on the clever food, although the huge Keith Haring print inside demands a little attention.

The Duck Duck Bruce ethos is friendship and a consistent product. Get the chilli eggs with a soothing lassi. Or the baked beans, which Sean spent a week perfecting for the right tomatoey, smoky flavour.

Stop by and say hello; do it enough times and, like one regular, you may get your own button on the till.
