Alter Ego

5:00pm - 11:00pm
1 James Street Fremantle 6160

At Alter Ego the passion for a good pour goes beyond the drinks menu.

The cocktail bar stages pop-up urban wineries (including WA’s first) that have visitors fermenting and stomping grapes right on premises. Masterclasses are held regularly on topics such as spirit distilling, and brewers, such as Sydney’s Young Henrys, fly over to set up mini in-bar breweries to school punters in the art of brewing.

Not bad for a spot that was once a dusty corner in an old industrial warehouse. Alter Ego is housed in The Mantle, an open-plan dining area in said converted warehouse, along with a pizzeria, a tapas joint and a sporadic burger bar.

While The Mantle itself has pop-art paintings suspended from beams, the speakeasy-inspired Alter Ego is decorated with Prohibition-era works. Against this industrial-cool backdrop there is good-old-fashioned service and high-quality cocktails.

A must-try is the Sunshine Harvest Batida. It’s tangy and creamy, thanks to cachaça, condensed milk, coconut, and passionfruit. It also nods to the warehouse’s former life as Sunshine Harvester, a machinery manufacturer in the 1920s.

A recent menu change has seen the bar menu spin off in a New Orleans direction: think fried oyster po' boy reimagined as a bao, jambalaya and beignets.
