You know you’ve made it as a cocktail when you have your own week. This year marks the third edition of Negroni Week, an international charity that sees bars around the world donate at least a dollar from every Negroni sold to charity. Last year, 3500 bars in 44 countries took part. This year, 30 venues across Perth are joining the celebration. Among the bartenders getting behind the cause is Tristram Fini, bar manager at Late Night Valentine and a long-time advocate for the holy trinity of gin, sweet vermouth and Campari.
“It’s a special occasion and an any-occasion drink,” says Fini, who likes his Negronis made with Sipsmith gin, Campari and Antica Formula. “It’s a good anytime cocktail. You can have it before a meal, during a meal or after it.”
Fini and his fellows will be donating a dollar from every Negroni sold to beyondblue. The funsters at Mechanics’ Institute Bar have joined forces with neighbours and it-gelateria Chicho Gelato to serve classic Negronis with a scoop of refreshing Campari-and-grapefruit sorbet. In the spirit of WA Day, The Dominion League is serving three different Negronis using local gins from The West Winds, Hippocampus and Beacon Gin from the Geographe Distillery. Both venues are supporting Leading Youth Forward, a charity providing positive experiences and mentorship for at-risk teens.
At Frisk Small Bar, a crisp $20 note gets drinkers a Negroni, a grilled-truffle mac-and-cheese sandwich and a donation to Alzheimer’s Australia. Lot Twenty is celebrating the cocktail with its Negroni Degustation Night on June 8. Chef Justin West has prepared a four-course menu with each dish matched to a creative Negroni remix: think citrus-and-Campari cheesecake paired with a cold-drip coffee Negroni. Tickets are $85 and the event is in aid of Short Back and Sidewalks, an organisation providing haircuts and support to homeless people in Perth.
Non-gin drinkers can still get into the spirit at specialist American whiskey outpost Varnish on King. Hidden among the taxidermy is a barrel filled with Boulevardier, a Negroni with bourbon standing in for the gin. It’s been ageing in oak for a week and will be opened at the start of Negroni Week.
