Allan Mpora and Tania Tan opened Nasi Lemak Korner in Como in mid-2015, to showcase the cuisine of Tan’s native Malaysia. Almost two years later and the couple has expanded to Mosman Park.
The couple says they were drawn to the suburb because it has a similar demographic to Como. So far, the local community has embraced the venue.
“Once we had the artwork outside there was a lot of interest, and we tweaked the design based on some of the feedback” says Mpora. "The building is nearly 200 years old and we’ve retained some of the old style, keeping the history but adding our Nasi Lemak flair.”
The business is a family affair with artwork featuring the couple’s children – created by Tan’s cousin – taking centre stage in both restaurants.
The Mosman Park menu is the same as the original, with a revamped summer menu to be introduced in the New Year. Both modern and traditional dishes are represented, from street food to dessert. While nasi lemak and complimentary sambal are always available, roti is only served on weekends.
A banker by trade, Mpora oversees the day-to-day of both restaurants but attributes their success to his team. “I get a lot of help, there are a lot of unsung heroes in the background,” he says. “My head chef, she goes above and beyond. I’ve got a team of people who treat the business like their own.”
