Maylands’s much-loved Mrs S has a new sister in Highgate. The younger Mrs S has only been open a week but the feedback has been positive, not least because the new cafe has double the capacity of Maylands.

“People ask why we don’t approach the council for extra seating at Maylands,” says owner Aaron Ho. “Highgate was a good choice for our customers.”

Despite setting up in larger premises - the cafe takes over the former Solomon's site - the new Mrs S faithfully channels the look and spirit of the original. Maylands regulars will notice plenty of similarities between the two cafes, from the menus bound in Little Golden Books, to the pretty cakes on the counter. Scatter cushions add a splash of colour to the exposed-brick backdrop. Outdoor seating is available at the back of the cafe. The coffee is from local roaster Dimattina.

Although the Beaufort Street spin-off serves new dishes, including a meatball toastie and pulled-pork bagel, Mrs S favourites, such as the rose and berry panna cotta and Granny June’s corn bread – and the aforementioned Manwich – are also available.

“Before we decided on the menu we spent time getting feedback from the Maylands customers on what dishes they’d like to see in Highgate,” says Ho.

Ho’s wife, Thuong Do, is a baker, and is responsible for keeping the counter filled with those signature Mrs S sweets. She’ll also trial new cakes and sweets at the Beaufort Street store before offering them for sale at Maylands.
