Necessity is the mother of invention. Or at least that’s what Jasmine Hyde and Jarrad Read believe. The owners of LaBuda Juice Bar had brewed on the idea of opening a health-focused cafe for five years. When a spot became vacant on Flora Terrace the couple, despite having no previous hospitality experience, jumped on the opportunity.
“We’ve lived in the area for the past 15 years,” says Hyde. “It’s a great place to live but north of Trigg, there’s no cool little juice bars or anything like it around.”
Filled with natural light, beachside furnishings and locally made timber furniture, LaBuda’s aesthetic was inspired by Cafe Organic in Bali.
Juice combinations span the flavour spectrum from green to vegetable with the Cold Killa (carrot, ginger, apple, lemon and pepper) emerging as an early crowd favourite. Juices are cold-pressed to order and adventurous drinkers can make their own combinations. Loaded smoothie bowls spiked with protein powder fit the bill for something more substantial. The coffee is supplied by local roasters, Micrology.
Since opening in February, Hyde and Read have introduced more food options including daily salads and homemade, raw, vegan treats such as granola slices, Snickers slices and brownies. Through winter, soup, porridge and toasties are also available.
“As it has started to get more of a name for itself we’ve tried to take a few risks to make it more exciting,” says Hyde. “We’ve been shocked with how well the community has responded.”
