For a quarter of a century, The Groper & His Wife has called City Beach’s Empire Village (formerly the Boulevard Shopping Centre) home.
For joint owners and locals Paul and Bec Bertucci, and Aaron and Krystal Visser, having to rebuild after the fire that destroyed the restaurant and neighbouring stores in 2014, has been both a financial and emotional investment that’s seen customers flooding back.
The rebooted restaurant’s clean white aesthetic is a radical change from the original building. Local creative studio Design Theory was responsible for the new interiors, while much of the manual labour was performed by members of the extended Bertucci and Visser clans. A feature mural by WA artist Grace Slaven adorns one of the walls inside and fresh blooms from Wild at Heart Floral Design keeps the place bright and cheery.
“The secret is in our attitude: we want to serve you well,” says Paul. “We aren’t afraid of hard work and above all we believe in what we are serving. It’s fresh and delicious, every time.”
Since taking over the Groper six years ago, Paul has assumed the role of manager and his younger brother, Joel, runs the kitchen. Aaron is in charge of sourcing produce, such as the sustainably caught seafood from Carnarvon and Shark Bay. The fish is filleted on site.
The menu offers a fish of the day and seasonal seafood – whiting, say. Orders can be deep-fried, barbecue-grilled and crumbed. Regular and spicy peri-peri seasonings are available. The lunch burger has proven popular, and raw seafood is also available to take home.
Joel is planning on launching showcase evenings such as Taco Tuesdays and Soft-Shell Crab Thursdays soon.
