Pinot envy. It’s a thing. Whether you’re growing the famously fickle red grape or working your way through the pinot aisle at your favourite bottle shop or bar, pinot noir has a way of sinking its juicy, red-fruited talons into wine types.
In the case of Bottle Shops Concept founder Dan Sims, his love of the grape led to the establishment of Pinot Palooza, an annual event that assembles pinot noir wines from more than 100 antipodean and international producers. Throw in a fun music focus and you’re looking at the makings of a fun afternoon. Here’s Sims’s hit-list of producers to seek out.
Curly Flat (Macedon, Victoria)
Perfumed, balanced and long-lived. I really like these wines and often make a bee-line for them for a cheeky tipple before doors open. It’s the kind of wine you can drink now or, if you can keep your hands of it, hold onto for years to come.
Moondarra (Gippsland, Victoria)
Neil has been with us since the beginning and gets fully into the spirit of the day. Aside from pouring his wonderful, earthy Gippsland pinot noir – a region to watch closely, by the way – he’ll also be the one kicking off the dance floor to New Order’s Blue Monday sometime in the afternoon.
Charteris (Central Otago, New Zealand)
Aside from being absolute legends, Chrisy and PJ [Charteris; the winemakers] make downright awesome pinot noir. While Otago might be known for fuller-flavoured styles, this has the best of both worlds. Fruit power with freshness and just a touch of sass.
Stoney Rise (Tasmania)
Tasmania makes damn good pinot noir and the variation from site to site is quite remarkable. I’ve always liked Mr Holyman’s wines as much as the man himself. They’re both full of character.
Obviously this will be of renown for Perth locals and if not, it should be. Great pinot may be in short supply in WA, but what it lacks in volume it makes up for in style. And Picardy has oodles of it. A must try.
Pinot Palooza is at Claremont Showgrounds (1 Graylands Road, Claremont) on Saturday July 29. Tickets are $65 (including a take-home Plumm wine glass) and are available online.
