Since opening Brika two years ago Simon Psaros has wanted to introduce Perth to Greek street food. With the opening of Filos and Yiros, he’s done just that. This isn’t a new venue, it’s the same one making better use of its existing space. The takeaway window has been servicing the coffee crowd for some time; now Greek street food will be added to the offering.
Leading the Hellenic-street-food charge is the yiros: a fluffy pita filled with lamb (slow-cooked in an oven), chicken or pork (rotisserie cooked over charcoal), tomato, onion, tzatziki and – the real genius move – hand-cut chips. Only a few are added but it’s one of the things that sets the yiros apart from the Turkish kebab.
Then there are the filos made with pastry imported from Greece. Spirals of flaky filo pastry are filled with spinach (spanakopita), custard (bougatsa), sausage (loukanikopita), cheese (tiropita) or chicken (kotopita).
“We wanted to give filos and yiros an identity in Perth as the corner stone of Greek street food,” Psaros says. “If anyone travels to Greece it’s likely they will know yiros before they know anything else food wise.”
The takeaway window at Brika lends itself well to the street-food feel. With Weld Square across the road customers can grab and go, and sit and relax in the open air.
To celebrate the opening of Filos and Yiros on Saturday July 30, anyone that buys a filos or yiros on Saturday between 12pm and 3pm will receive another free.
