It’s looking like a good summer, not least for those who appreciate good food and drink.

Between restaurant-kind’s graduating class of 2017 and old favourites that keep on keeping on, eaters and drinkers in this city are spoiled for – and perhaps paralysed by – choice.

From relaxed Southern Californian eats in North Freo, to recovery brunching by the beach – with or without booze – this hit list of summery eating and drinking ideas will help you squeeze maximum enjoyment out of the break. Go for a swim at Cottesloe, then refuel at Il Lido
Beachside venues come and go, but Cottesloe’s beloved seaside cantina continues to command attention (and on weekends, not inconsiderable queues). For something a little more casual, head down the road to Canteen, the Il Lido famiglia’s charming ’50s-style pizzeria.

Seize the (Ku) Dae (Ta) After decades of West Australians travelling to Bali, the traffic went the other way earlier this year with Seminyak beach lounge Ku De Ta opening in East Perth. The vibe at The Deck and West is casual, while Ku Dining fits the bill for something a little more ambitious but still approachable.

Check out Piggy Food Co 2.0 North Fremantle’s Piggy Food Co was always meant to be a small bar. Mid this year owners Max Kordyl and Andrea Young finally got the green light to sell alcohol and their cosy Queen Victoria Street hangout really took off. Come for vibrant Southern Californian snacks (good tacos and loaded fries), stay for the thrilling craft-beer focus (closed until January 3).

Drop by Clint Nolan’s newest Northbridge opening Just don’t call it a beer garden. Taking over the old The Shed site on Aberdeen, Henry Summer is a sprawling “wine and cocktail garden” with wine and cocktails on tap and light dining options. Best of all, dogs are welcome.

Sip a very good cocktail at COMO The Treasury’s rebooted lounge bar Two words: Martini trolley. At last, Perth’s grandest bed-for-the-night has a lounge bar befitting one of the world’s great hotels. While you’re there, pop your head into Post, the hotel’s in-house restaurant that recently swapped modern bistro for Italian comfort.

Meet the newest member of the El Publico family Non-standard-issue tacos. A mini forest of tequila and mescal bottles. That light-up pink-neon donkey. The family resemblance between La Vida Urbana and its parent venue El Publico is obvious, but little flourishes – in particular the offer of brunch – denotes this Leederville cafe as its own, fun-loving beast.

Get acquainted with Perth’s best new seaside venue When word got out that veteran Perth chef David Coomer was driving the menu at Island Market Trigg (the new identity of the former Kailis Trigg Beach) expectations were high. Coomer didn’t disappoint and graced diners with an edible mixtape of Middle Eastern spice, Mediterranean seafood and frequent nods to the backyard barbie – hello, tinnies and fancy pavlova.
