Freo BeerFest is back to take over Esplanade Park for the festival's fifth year. Presented by Fremantle’s Little Creatures brewery, the two-day beer fest will host more than 50 Western Australian craft breweries, cideries and distillers, and will also feature twelve local producers and a line-up of entertainment.

Running over November 11 and 12, here are our picks for what to see and do.

Interesting Brews (and Spirits)
With more than 300 brews and ciders on offer across the weekend, you’ll need to come prepared.

Curios include Rocky Ridge Brewing Co’s Dr Weedy’s Hemp Ale, the first Australian beer to legally use roasted hemp seeds. They add flavours of hazelnut, sesame and toast. Otherside Brewing will pour a strawberry gum kettle sour, made with native Australian strawberry gum tree bark; and Blasta Brewing Co. will serve its award-winning wheat beer, infused with real tangerine and aromas of banana, clove and nutmeg.

But it’s not all beer. Whisky lovers should seek out tastings of Limeburners Darkest Winter Single Malt Whisky. It holds the title of Best Whisky in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as Best International Craft Whisky in the World.

Brewers and beer experts will hold education sessions every hour across the weekend. Expect master brewer forums; beer and food matching classes; live demonstrations; home-brewing discussions; and talks from industry experts. There’ll also be cooking demonstrations from many of the fest’s gourmet street-food stalls.

Shower beers
Crafted Events WA is getting inventive with its beer offering by transforming its stand into a combined shower and beer bar.

The bar will feature two fully operational showers with tiled walls and floors, and a five-tap system built within so you can pour yourself a drink while having a rinse. There will be seven locally crafted beers on offer, two available in a can. Staff will be dressed in bathroom attire to suit the setting, and you’ll find soap dishes and a bubble machine in the stalls.

Live entertainment
Live music, comedy and DJs will run on the main stage during the weekend. Highlights include Australian acts Kid Kenobi, Ash Grunwald and Kav Temperley of Eskimo Joe. Fire-breathers, stilt-walkers and other circus performers will roam the park.

Spiegelau beer-glass tasting
Glassware brand Spiegelau is holding a class to teach the impact different glasses can have on beer drinking. You’ll learn how to pour the perfect head and which glasses to use with different types of beer. Tickets to the class include a three-piece Spiegelau Craft Beer tasting kit and three Australian craft beers to take home.

Gourmet food stalls
Food highlights include Burnt Ends Smoking Co. serving American-style barbeque, including smoked tender lamb ribs; brisket burger with chipotle slaw, tomato jam and pickled onion; and its signature slow-smoked beef ribs served with house-made pickles, smoky tomato jam and slaw. There will also be Margaret River dumplings, traditional German bratwurst, Valencian paella and chicken coxinha.

Fremantle BeerFest runs on Saturday November 11 from 1pm to 9pm and on Sunday November 12 from 12pm to 8pm at Esplanade Park, Fremantle.
