Sure, we’re excited that restaurants, cafes and bars will soon be able to serve a limited number of dine-in guests, but for now, takeaway and home delivery remain the best ways to support our local hospitality industry.
These are some of the new arrivals on the Covid-19 takeaway and home-delivery scene. Let’s make them feel welcome, Perth.
The Hummus Club
In The Hummus Club we trust. Kaitlin Eterovic and Ziad Zammar’s Middle Eastern clubhouse on William Street is reopening with two takeaway options. THC Cook at Home Experience is a heat-and-eat feast that includes slow-roasted lamb shoulder, Iraqi bread, hummus and sides. (A vegan version is also available). Ready-to-eat mezza packs are also available, and you can add desserts and additional items to your order, including The Hummus Club’s sharply designed merchandise and wines; the collaborative orange wine with LS Merchants certainly turned our heads. Pick-up available Thursday to Saturday. THC Cook at Home packs must be pre-ordered online by 2pm the day of pick-up.
Zaatar fried chicken. Pilafs. Grilled chicken meal deals. White chocolate and cardamom tiramisu. (Yes!) Eamon Sullivan’s contemporary Middle Eastern restaurant in Mount Hawthorn enters the takeaway game with a tight edit of comforting Levantine flavours. Food aside, a selection of takeaway wines at snappy prices makes for a compelling reason to stay home and feast. Pick-up available Friday and Saturday. Order online.
Also from the department of Middle Eastern comfort eating: the Hadiqa at Home meal deal for two includes a 36-hour braised lamb shoulder with piquillo peppers and dates, jewelled rice and pita bread. Extra rice and pita are also available, as are bottles of wine and beer in growlers and squealers. Available to pick up Friday and Saturday. Pre-order online before 5pm on Thursday.
Varnish on King
King Street’s favourite underground whiskey den has reopened as the Varnish Bake Shop, with a similar American focus to the mothership. Choose from chicken jambalaya hand pies, buttermilk and macadamia custard tarts (vegetarian; nut-free versions available by pre-order) and heat-at-home pumpkin buns. Available Monday to Friday from 12pm to 5pm. Pre-order available by calling (08) 9324 2237.
This Japanese-inspired bar at Hibernian Place has launched DIY bao kits complete with steamed bao buns, Japanese slaw and a choice of miso-fried chicken, miso-fried cauliflower or slow-cooked beef short rib. Party-sized packs are also available, and you can add bottled cocktails to your order. Available to pick up Friday to Saturday only. Pre-order online.
Erect your own dance pole in your living room, order a DIY taco kit from Caballitos and recreate the Mexican bar’s good-time atmosphere at home. Taco flavours include braised lamb with chipotle mayo and pickled onion; frijoles with pecorino and scorched padrón peppers; and beef shin with kewpie and piquillo salsa. All kits include guacamole and tortillas, and you can get Pirate Life beer in growlers and squealers. Available to pick-up from sister venue The Flour Factory from 12pm to 6pm Monday to Friday. Pre-order online.
Foxtrot Unicorn owner Dimitri Rtshiladze and his team are hand-delivering cocktails, craft beer and fun wines – see the “Juicy Bangers” three-pack – that they’d normally pour for us at their retro-leaning basement bar on the Terrace. Of particular note is the bar’s collection of bottled cocktails, including signatures such as the honeycomb Old Fashioned and pineapple-laced Negroni. Free delivery throughout Western Australia. Order online.
You trawl YouTube and Netflix for the entertainment; the buzzy Asian bar and eatery at The Rechabite will bring the deliciousness to you, with pick-up and delivery available Thursday to Sunday. Yum cha is sold frozen in packs for one or two, while flatbreads, burgers and selected items from the Double Rainbow menu are also available. And there’s a fine assortment of spice-sympathetic booze to round off your meal deal. Order online
Pizza. Pasta. Half and whole rotisserie chicken with roast-dripping vegetables. Mark and Kylee-Anne Cecchi’s cosy, family-run Inglewood Italian restaurant certainly understands the definition of comfort dining. We’re looking at you, rigatoni bolognaise. Pick-up available Thursday to Sunday. Order online.
The Flour Factory
Meat and beer is the name of the game at Andy Freeman’s gin palace. Charcuterie platters and cook-at-home grass-fed Dandaragan tomahawk steaks are available for takeaway alongside growlers and squealers of Pirate Life beer. Pre-order online to pick up on Friday or Saturday.
