Smidge Bakery Is Back – and Serving 20 Trays of Cinnamon Scrolls a Day
When their shopfront in Lyric Lane abruptly closed last September, Smidge Bakery co-owners Gen Walters and Liz Younger got to work searching for the perfect new home.
“We were looking around the Maylands area originally but we just couldn’t find anywhere that was really us,” Walters tells Broadsheet. “We wanted to make sure that we weren’t too far from the community that we had built because they are so important to us.”
Smidge’s new digs are tucked away on the southern end of Leederville’s Oxford Street strip, slightly set back from the street. “That was what really drew us to this space more than anything. More than the massive space, the big kitchen, the coolroom. It was the fact that it had laneway vibes without being in a laneway,” says Walters.
Along with help from family and some very generous regulars, the pair undertook a complete transformation of the site in just under six months. “Liz designed everything. My parents helped out, Liz’s mum made the cushions… some regular customers from the last place even volunteered to do the staff bathroom for us,” she says. The result is an inviting, light-filled space with touches of Smidge’s signature pink hues throughout.
When it quietly opened in late September, it sold a record 15 trays of scrolls in a day.
“We were not prepared for it to get so busy so quickly. At the old shop, I think the most trays I ever made in one day was 10 or 11,” says Walters. Now Smidge averages 20 trays a day, so there’s plenty to go around.
Other little treats are well represented on the menu with choc caramel brownies, salted Caramilk cookies, ham and cheese toasties made with house-baked focaccia, and a granola bowl.
