Shine Sundays at Madalena’s
Since opening in April, Madalena’s upstairs bar has quickly established itself as one of the west’s best places to sip, snack and soak up ocean views. Following the launch of Shine Sundays – the bar’s new weekly Sunday session – locals have even more reason to chart a course for South Fremantle. Entry is free, doors open from 1pm and DJs start playing from 3pm with local selector Ben Taffe rostered on for the rest of June.

157 not out
Last week, Bunbury’s 157-year-old Rose Hotel unveiled its new-look front bar featuring more space, more tables, more televisions and more beers on tap, with guests able to choose from 33 different draught brews. The refresh is phase one of the hotel’s makeover and is the culmination of almost seven years of planning by the hotel’s custodians, Dave Allen and Lawson Douglas of Locals Co (owners of The Subiaco Hotel and Kalgoorlie’s The Exchange Hotel, among other venues).

Applications for citizenship to the Republic of Fremantle are open (again)
Gin fans that missed out on Republic of Fremantle’s initial membership drive have another chance to become a “citizen” of the Freo urban distillery. Founders are hoping to raise $1 million for the next stage of the distillery’s expansion that will build the mezzanine floor of the venue and triple its capacity. Investment options start from $1000 with each $1000 investment giving its investor a $100 Republic of Fremantle coin each year for five years. More details are available online.

Vue du Monde comes to Perth
Melbourne fine diner Vue du Monde regularly features in “best restaurant in Australia” discussions, thanks in no small part to the arrival of executive chef Hugh Allen (ex-Noma) in 2019. Next month, Allen is heading west to cook with Brendan Owens at Rockpool Bar & Grill as part of the WA Good Food Guide’s Truffles Unearthed series. The dinner is on Tuesday July 12 and features seven courses showcasing Manjimup black truffle, paired with WA wines. Tickets are $349 per person and available online.

Chenin shenanigans
Tickets are still available for tomorrow’s (Thursday June 16) Chenanigans chenin blanc tasting at Mayfair Lane. Guests will get to taste contemporary Western Australian expressions of chenin blanc made by producers such as Corymbia, Vino Volta and Las Vino while listening to commentary from winemakers and Mayfair Lane owner, Foni Pollitt. Tickets are $55 and available online.
