In defence of the continental breakfast
This Saturday, August 6, the team at Northbridge’s Kafka Coffee Shop will be doing its utmost to make continental breakfasts great again. It helps, of course, that Kafka has roped in some very talented folks to help start the weekend right. Chief among these conspirators is gun pastry chef Natasha Brownfield, whose ethereal, golden croissants are among the city’s most compelling viennoiseries. In addition to ace pastries, ceramics from Sole Ceramics and records and books from Highgate Continental will also be available for purchase. The good times kick off at 9am, although expect the queue to start building well before then.

Cocktail den Bobeche revisits some of its greatest hits
How did you celebrate your 10th birthday? An ice-cream cake? Pass the parcel? A super session at Timezone? For the team at CBD cocktail den Bobeche, turning 10 is the perfect excuse to revisit some of most memorable drinks shaken, stirred and served at the bar over the past decade. Among the drinks being reissued to mark the occasion: the wintry Truffled Hot Buttered Rum; the Bobeche Gimlet, subverted with chamomile and grapefruit; and the sloe gin and apricot brandy classic, the Charlie Chaplin. Bobeche’s greatest hits menu is available till September 3.

Simply the Besk
Staying on the topic of bars beginning with B celebrating birthdays: West Leederville’s Besk turns three this month and is throwing one heck of a party to celebrate. From midday to midnight on Saturday August 13, Besk will be hosting free tastings from some of its favourite WA winemakers; reintroducing its sour beer bar, serving hard-to-find bottles for drink-in enjoyment; and hosting a takeover of its 24 beer taps by Brisbane’s Range Brewing and Wellington’s Garage Project (and releasing a commemorative collab beer on the day to boot). Music from RTRFM DJs and good snacking will add to the party atmosphere.

New hours at Alberta’s
Since opening in June, Busselton cafe Alberta’s and its baked goods have featured prominently in both my Instagram feed and down-south travel plans. After spending the past two months getting to know locals and the market, Alberta’s owners Kirsty Marchant and Ben Ing have tweaked their shop’s trading hours slightly. They’ll now open from 8am to noon, Thursday to Monday – excellent news for local hospitality workers and out-of-towners enjoying a long weekend in the Margaret River region.

What Stephen Clarke did next
Some good news for diners saddened by last month’s closure of northern corridor favourite Clarke’s of North Beach: the restaurant’s eponymous chef-patron Stephen Clarke has resurfaced at QT Perth, where he’s been announced as the hotel’s executive chef. Working with Santini Bar & Grill chef de cuisine Dario Pompucci, Clarke will bring decades of fine-dining experience and a commitment to training to his new role.
