It was a good season for sandwich lovers with two banh mi spots, a panini bar and a sandwich joint. There’s also new Filipino street food, beachside pizza and more.

It’s hard to muster up the courage to leave the house during winter – but with restaurants, bars and cafes like these, how could you not?

Here are the best new Perth openings we covered in winter 2025.

Banh Mi & Chè, Carlisle

When Kelly Vo moved from her hometown of Nha Trang, Vietnam, to Perth, she noticed a hole in the market. Where were all the Vietnamese desserts? Before Vo brought staples like chè to Archer Street with Banh Mi & Chè, Vietnamese sweet treats were hard to find. Chè is a coconut milk-based dessert that traditionally mixes in mung beans, tapioca, jelly and seasonal fruits, although you can customise it with additional toppings and tweak the sweetness to your liking. While Vo’s passion is desserts, the menu offers other Viet staples like roast pork banh mi on crispy bread; egg fried rice; and the savoury sticky rice dish xoi man. These street food classics can be paired with drinks like Viet coffee, which mixes robust flavours of dark roast coffee with sweetened condensed milk.

Earl’s, Mount Hawthorn

Meet Earl’s, a casual Mount Hawthorn lunch spot, which was opened by Will Parkes after he closed down coffee window Fornever. Earl’s prides itself on a tight but hearty menu. It starts the day with a substantial breakfast sandwich of a ham hock patty with egg and American cheese drizzled with barbeque sauce. From 10.30am, you can find lunch options like roast lamb flatbread filled with fries, jalapeno zhug and garlic yoghurt; and a roast beef hoagie with scamorza, dijonnaise and pickles.

Gelato Messina, Victoria Park

Winter weather forecasts shouldn’t stop you from getting gelato, and Messina knows that. After opening its original Perth store in 2023, Messina is doubling down on WA with a new Victoria Park store. The fit-out includes its signature orange accents, but seems slightly more mature with a curved gelato counter offering 35 classic flavours and five changing weekly specials.

Kalye Filipino Streats, Northbridge

Opened by Arldee Indoy and Eloise Bayaras, Kalye Filipino Streats aims to bring Perth up to speed with the boom of new Filipino menus across the country. Kalye’s menu reflects the rich tapestry of Filipino flavours, which draw on Chinese and Spanish influences. Indoy and Bayaras want to let people know that there’s more to Filipino cuisine than adobo. Kalye’s menu is a pared-back series of street food favourites, neatly divided into columns for mains and extras. Adobo is listed as an extra, rather than a headliner. Leading the menu is inasal (grilled chicken). There’s also a street-food focus with staples like gulaman (think of a brown sugar juice, with plum sago and jelly) and buko pandan, a funky cendol-like drink studded with coconut shreds.

Lulu’s Cantina, Subiaco

Sibling to beloved Subiaco osteria Lulu La Delizia, Lulu’s Cantina is a walk-ins-only wine bar-style space serving thick-cut paninis, antipasti and aperitivo treats, as well as Lulu’s famous meatballs and rotating pasta specials. The cantina opens at midday, offering a more casual visit while still maintaining Lulu’s philosophy of hearty hospitality. The small kitchen slices its own salumi and offers a selection of Italian cheeses and wines, coffee and deli sandwiches. Come the evening, it becomes more of a wine bar, with pasta and drinking snacks, making the northern Italian annex an easy visit at any time of day.

North 54, Leederville

Bac Pham (ex-Rockpool and Petition) is reimagining the classic Vietnamese sandwich at North 54. The compact menu is accommodating to most dietary restrictions, making Pham’s creations accessible to a wider audience – gluten-free diners can enjoy banh mi fillings as a rice or noodle bowl, and vegan diners are catered for too with an eggplant, mushroom and miso tofu offering. Other dishes include hibachi-grilled gai yang (Thai-marinated chicken); fermented red bean marinated roast pork; and the son-in-law egg banh mi with gooey eggs, tamarind mayo and crisp shallots. Drinks include Vietnamese-style drip coffees served dine-in or takeaway, as well as coconut water with a pandan “cloud” – a silky whipped topping – and a photogenic matcha “cloud” with clean, defined layers.

Ronnies Pizza, Scarborough Beach

Ronnie’s is just a few minutes’ walk from Scarborough Beach. It’s close enough that you can grab a hot slice and carry it back to your towel and it’ll still be steaming. The casual new venue is a joint venture between the Hoodburger team and long-time collaborator Chris Fabbro. The pizzeria is serving American-style slices that are sturdy enough to hold in one hand, chewy with a crisp base, and cut big enough to fold. The dough ferments for up to 72 hours. Toppings include a Chicago-style sweet sausage slice; a vodka sauce number with mellow tomato flavour and silky texture; and a mortadella and caramelised pineapple pie. Another pizza features spinach pesto and whipped ricotta – a vibrant green-white combo that’s salty, creamy and fresh all at once.
