Jackets at the ready. Truffle Kerfuffle, the Southern Forests’ annual celebration of black truffles and the region’s food and wine, takes place this weekend. From truffle hunts and wine masterclasses to dinners both intimate and large, this year’s program reads like one heck of a good time, and tickets are still available for many events. Add to that a fresh new line-up at this year’s Festival Village, featuring new vendors and chefs serving truffle-inspired treats, and you’ve got a very compelling reason to head south for the winter. (Bonus: many events include weekend-long entry to the festival village.)

Here’s our pick of the (remaining) crop.

Scott Brannigan’s Hunter’s Breakfast
Bread in Common chef and local produce advocate Scott Brannigan will be serving a four-course breakfast showing off Southern Forests ingredients and black truffles. Breakfast will be served alongside fresh pressed juices and local sparkling wine to get the weekend (or recovery) started right. Tickets are $140 per person and includes entry to the Festival Village all weekend.

Sue Hutchins’ Sunday Brunch
The chef at Northbridge’s Shadow Wine Bar is swapping the urban digs of Alex Hotel for calming vistas of Fonty’s Pool. A new addition to the program, this grown-up Sunday brunch features plenty of truffles, plenty of sparkling wine and plenty of good cheer. Tickets are $160 per person and includes entry to the Festival Village all weekend.

Rachael Niall’s The Shed Wine Sessions
Explore the wines of the Southern Forests with guided one-hour tastings led by festival wine curator and Budburst owner Rachael Niall. (As an introduction to Niall’s down-to-earth approach to wine, she’s recommended five of the region’s wines to drink this winter). Spaces are still available to some of Sunday’s sessions. Tickets are $30 and include nibbles.

Truffle Kerfuffle Closing Party
Toast the end of the eighth Truffle Kerfuffle festival with a glass of wine by an open fire, some live music and a plate of simple, hearty food prepared by Stuart Laws. As good a reason as any to spend an extra Sunday (or more) in the Southern Forests before heading home. Tickets are $40 and include a drink (additional drinks available for purchase). There are also $70 tickets including entry to the Festival Village all weekend.

Join a Truffle Hunt
While not finders-keepers, truffle hunts offer guests a chance to join truffle producers and their trained truffle dogs to seek out and gather these rare tubers. Growers hosting hunts include Australian Truffle Traders and chef David Coomer. Various times and prices (some including transport from festival village) are available.

Truffle Kerfuffle is being held at Fonty’s Pool June 22–24. Tickets can be booked online.
