You might know Mitch Orr as the chef behind the Italian, not Italian food at ACME in Sydney. Maybe you’ve heard about his Cambodian Street food pop-up, Kingdom of Rice. And maybe you’re seeing him at this weekend’s Gourmet Escape where he’ll be, among other things, catering the closing party with good mate Louis Tikram, the Australian chef kicking goals in Los Angeles at EP & LP. For those not making it down south for the food party, you’ll have one more chance to catch Orr in action when he teams up with Simon Kony of Short Order Burger Co for a one-night-only pop-up.

“I’ve always been a big fan of everything he does,” says Kony. “I finally got a chance to check out ACME and we met. We hit it off and kept in touch here and there. When I heard he was coming for Gourmet Escape I posed the question and thankfully he said yes.”

Kony and Orr will be manning the grill on Monday November 19 and offering just two items on the menu. The first will be a lemongrass beef burger, a take on a Kingdom of Rice dish “with a Short Order spin”, while the second is the Phnom Penh chicken wings which will be graced with the kick of fermented chilli.

The event will be held at Short Order’s Hay Street store and run from 6pm till 10pm or until sold out. Kony expects demand to be high and suggests hopeful diners arrive early.

DJ Aslan, a mutual friend of both chefs, will be supplying the tunes while Gage Roads will bring the beer. Kony modestly expects the night to have a “little hospo party vibe”.

“For me it was just an opportunity that I had to take, just because of how much of a fan I am,” he says. “I’ve always wanted to collaborate with really good chefs, and this is where it starts.”

The Kingdom of Rice Pop-Up at Short Order Burger Co (800 Hay Street Perth) runs from 6pm till 10pm on Monday November 19.
