From Japanese-Western treats like matcha tiramisu to authentic mitarashi dango (rice flour dumplings), this Fremantle cafe is swapping curries for sweets.

When Hinata opened in 2022, it was the latest in a long chain of highly specialised Japanese eateries that sold udon, soufflé pancakes and tempura. Hinata filled a brekkie-sized hole in the space with homestyle brunches and curries. Once a year it breaks from its singular goal to shake things up over a weekend with Sweet Week.

The team shared all the details over on the Hinata Instagram. On the menu will be a matcha tiramisu, sweet and sticky mitarashi dango (rice flour dumpling skewers), and wagashi, a rice flour and bean confectionery.

Local Japanese health and beauty hakko (fermentation) therapist Aiko Arigoru will bring her traditional namagashi (raw hand-shaped rice flour dumplings with red bean paste filling) to the table. And a Perth cake maker known online as Perth Flower Cakes will provide flower ohagi, a pounded glutinous rice ball with white rice and sweet azuki filling, for sweet lovers to enjoy.

Over the weekend, Hinata is cutting its menu to just four Japanese curries with Japanese hamburger steak, ebi fry, korokke and veggie-loaded curries, so you can leave room for dessert.

The pop-up runs from Friday August 2 to Sunday August 4 from 10am to 4pm. Walk-ins only.
