Gelato Messina has covered its bases in Perth with a new south-of-the-river outpost, which opened over the weekend.

Gelato Messina first landed in Perth in 2023 and it’s been flat stick ever since. Now, the team has opened its second spot.

Speaking to Broadsheet, Messina co-owner Declan Lee said although the brand’s first store in Highgate “fit the puzzle … Vic Park was always where we originally wanted to be, we just love it there.” The new store sits on the buzzing Albany Highway. The street is an artery of food and flavours, with venues including Yip, Ramen Samurai and Delicioso Gelato.

Drenched in Messina’s signature orange, the fit-out leans into ’70s rounded forms with a curved gelato counter, communal circular benches and cylindrical light fixtures. “We always design stores differently to the last one, and they never have a set form. This one feels like we are doing something quite grown up,” Lee says.

The shop will feature Messina’s signature 40-flavour range of gelati and sorbets, with 35 classic flavours and five changing weekly specials. The ingredients – including jersey milk from Messina’s dairy farm in Victoria – will be delivered to the store daily. “We churn in stores fresh every day, which is unique,” says Lee.

The Victoria Park store is bringing back the much-loved Rotto Buns special, which was originally used to launch the Highgate store. It’s a cream bun gelato with whipped cream and raspberry puree inspired by the jam and cream buns from Rottnest Bakery.

As well as gelato, there’s a range of cakes and jars of Messina’s house-made spreads, including dulce de leche and Messinatella. There’s also merch for those who want to wear their gelato addiction on their sleeves.

The bigger floor plan means there’s room for events and activations in the future. Lee teases that the team is even considering west coast editions of its Messina Eats collaborative pop-up, which has previously run in Sydney.
