The idea behind WA’s inaugural Spirit Week comes down to a single sentiment: let’s celebrate the success and growth of our local distilling industry.

With more and more people interested in understanding how local spirits are made and what produce is used, the week of events from December 4 to 11 aims to both educate and delight the public.

“We think it’s about time we had a festival to showcase all the great WA spirits that are now available,” says Onkie Cheng of Whipper Snapper Distillery. “We’re excited at the opportunity to grow the profile of the industry together and be able to encourage folks to drink and support local spirits.”

Broadsheet Access members get special tables at busy restaurants, tickets to exclusive events and discounts on food, coffee, brand offers and more.

The impressive line-up includes West Winds Gin, Limeburners, Hippocampus, Whipper Snapper, Old Youngs, Geographe Bay, Hoochery and Great Northern Distilleries. Four of the companies are involved with running the festival.

The week starts with a launch event at Dominion League on Sunday December 4 where guests will taste a range of Western Australian spirits. The rest of the program spans multiple venues and includes collaboration dinners with local restaurants, meet-the-maker events, distillery activities and tasting expos.

“I’m a little biased here, but I think the Whipper Snapper event is a winner – featuring the Little Cheese Shop, Sue Lewis Chocolates, 5 Senses Coffee and our whisky,” Cheng says.

Demand for locally made spirits is continually growing stronger. With this in mind, the organisers hope to see WA Spirit Week grow larger and more diverse in years to come – including running events in regional areas down the track.

WA Spirit Week runs from Sunday December 4 to Saturday December 11. More details of upcoming events can he found here, or search #WASpiritWeek on Instagram.
