12 To Try: Sunday Roasts in Perth To Get You Through Winter

The formula for a great Sunday roast hasn’t changed much over the generations, nor should it. Perth’s best versions simply pay closer attention to the details.
Here, arranged in order of price, are the city’s best.
Molly’s, Highgate & East Victoria Park
Few cuisines do comfort quite like the Irish. Beaufort Street local Molly’s proves the point with a Sunday roast that changes with the seasons, pairing quality roast meat with crisp potatoes, plenty of gravy and all the classic trimmings. It’s exactly the sort of unfussy, deeply comforting meal an Irish pub should be serving, best enjoyed with a creamy pint of Guinness close at hand.

Fibber McGee’s, Leederville
Banish all thoughts of drunken backpackers and four-leaf clovers – Fibber McGee’s is the real deal. Almost three decades since Fibber’s opened in 1998, its traditional Irish pub grub is as satisfying as ever. Whet your appetite with a slice of traditional Irish soda bread before choosing between roast beef, beef brisket, roast pork or roast turkey, all served with classic trimmings like roast potatoes, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy.

South Beach Hotel, South Fremantle
South Beach Hotel is a true-blue Aussie pub with a sweeping wraparound terrace, raucous sports bar and a polished wooden bar top that’s been used as a perch for pints of Swan since 1903. It’s a Freo staple, popular seven days a week, but never more so than on Sundays, when this local boozer fills with live music, cocktail specials and one of Perth’s best-value roasts. A rotating selection of cuts, from premium producers like Amelia Park, Linley Valley and Cape Grim, is served with seasonal baby carrots, Pemberton Royal Blue potatoes, broccolini and a homemade Yorkshire pudding, each roast finished with its own house-made gravy.

Seasonal Brewing, Maylands
Alongside 18 taps pouring beer brewed on-site, Seasonal Brewing Co has built a reputation for one of Perth’s most reliable Sunday roasts. The offering changes from week to week, with pork roasted overnight a regular favourite on the changing line-up, while Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables and gravy are reassuring constants. A vegan roast means nobody misses out, and if cauliflower cheese happens to feature on your plate, consider yourself lucky.

St Brigid Bar, Doubleview
Given the Irish penchant for Sunday roasts and Guinness, you would expect a bar named after Ireland’s patron saint of brewing (one of her miracles involved turning bathwater into beer) to be pretty good at both. Doubleview’s neighbourhood haunt St Brigid Bar does not disappoint. There are classic beef or mushroom roasts to be enjoyed in front of the roaring outdoor fire with a pint in hand. Both renditions come with crispy roast potatoes, glazed spears of broccolini, kale, red wine jus and, like all great roasts, a Yorkshire pudding.

Johnny Fox’s, Northbridge
Stepping into Johnny Fox’s is like teleporting into the heart of Dublin. From the lucky-green facade and cosy timber interiors to the effortless craic from the staff, everything about this Northbridge pub is thoroughly Gaelic, and the Sunday roast is no exception. Choose from the always-available roast beef or a rotating second option – or add both to the plate if one roast simply won’t do. Seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes, mash and lashings of gravy are the standard sides, while the cauliflower cheese is well worth the extra indulgence.
205 James Street, Northbridge
$32
The Globe, Perth CBD
The team at The Globe understands that the biggest disappointment at a Sunday roast isn’t overcooked meat or soggy potatoes, it’s watching the gravy run out before the meal does. Here, the elegant silver pitchers keep coming. Alongside unlimited gravy, the weekly changing roast – brisket is a regular favourite – arrives with crisp roast potatoes, greens and not one, but two Yorkshire puddings. Which, if we’re being honest, are really just another vessel for gravy. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of either.
495 Wellington Street, Perth
$34
Edward & Ida’s, Northbridge
From the veteran team behind Foxtrot Unicorn, Edward & Ida’s serves stepped-up pub fare in a retro-style venue. With a fireplace out back, a buzzy front bar and a cosy parlour lined with bric-a-brac and framed vintage posters, there’s no more fitting spot to settle in for a winter meal. Sunday’s roast stars smoked chook with chicken-fat Yorkshire puddings, house-smoked chipolatas, croquettes with a crisp herb and garlic stuffing, plus a generous jug of chicken gravy. If you’re feeling ambitious, add a few Southern-style sides to the table.
269 William Street, Northbridge
$35
Fallow, Northbridge
The woodfired oven at William Street’s Fallow is rarely idle, but Sunday might be its finest hour. Choose between slow-roasted Stirling Ranges rump cap, Black Label Berkshire porchetta or Amelia Park lamb leg, each served with Yorkshire pudding, roast vegetables and gravy. It would be a shame to stop there. Optional sides like cauliflower gratin, gruyere mac’n’cheese and Paris mash are made for sharing, although whether they actually make it around the table is another question.
314 William Street, Northbridge
$35
The Windsor, South Perth
Unlimited duck-fat potatoes should be adopted more widely. The Windsor clearly agrees, pairing them with bottomless gravy, thick slices of premium roast meat, honey-glazed carrots, seasonal greens and a Yorkshire pudding that earns its place on the plate. Served every Sunday in the Charthouse Restaurant, it’s a traditional English roast that refuses to ration the good bits. Having the Swan River flow by just across the road only sweetens the deal.
112 Mill Point Road, South Perth
$35
The Woodvale, Woodvale
Trust the Brits at the Woodie to keep the Sunday carvery roast alive. Every Sunday, the traditional British pub serves an all-you-can-eat, three-course feast beginning with soup and a bread roll before a classic carve-up of roast beef and pork with Yorkshire puddings and all the trimmings. Save room for dessert, because a choice of apple crumble or Nutella sponge with warm custard is included. It’s a refreshingly old-school approach to Sunday lunch, and one that still holds up remarkably well.
143 Trappers Drive, Woodvale
$40
Daph’s, Leederville
Sunday roasts at Daph’s are a three-course affair. Courtesy of owner and chef Pepe Dart, the menu typically starts with a crisp fish cake served with tomato chilli jam, pickled cucumbers and saffron aioli. Next comes a trio of pork belly, rump cap and lamb loin, accompanied by rosemary roasted potatoes, gratinated cheesy leeks, poached carrot with spiced dukkah, fire-roasted cabbage with bacon, a Yorkshire pudding and roasted jus. To finish, sticky date pudding arrives with vanilla bean ice-cream and smoked salted caramel. Arrive hungry.
