If you can’t stand that cliché “every hour is happy hour”, we feel you. We like our beer cold, affordable, and ideally presented to us within a specific timeframe at a great venue. So we’ve rounded up some of the best beer specials at the best spots in Perth, week in week out.
The Generous Squire
Happy hour: Mon to Fri, 5pm-6pm
The Perth CBD’s only fully-functioning microbrewery, The Generous Squire on Murray Street is a cross between a gastropub, bar, dining hall and brewery. All that makes it a multi-disciplined solution to basically any need involving beer and/or food. Happy hour here runs from 5pm-6pm Monday to Friday, and offers $9 pints across the full in-house James Squire range. This means access to limited edition brews like the Squire’s Hush, a “sticke altbier” with toffee, fudge and hops aromas, as well as their Interceptor Black IPA. On Thursdays you can match it with a burger for their BBQ Ribs Thursdays, where from 5pm $15 will get you a sticky pork ribs with chips and slaw.
Bill’s Bar & Bites
Happy hour: Mon to Thurs, 5pm–6pm
Leederville is known for its boutique shopping and food strip, but what about a quality drink at an even price? Bill’s Bar & Bites has you covered from Monday through Thursday between 5pm and 6pm. There’s $5 house wine and middies, and $8 pints on the full draught range. Prop yourself up in one of the windows, or at the bar for easy access, and share a serve of their chicken wings with blue cheese dip.
The Brisbane Hotel
Happy hour: Monday to Friday, 5.30pm–6.30pm
If you find yourself halfway between the city and Mount Lawley, craving a cold, reasonably priced beverage, head into The Brisbane Hotel. Often reserved for a summer Sunday session, this place is a trustworthy go-to for any occasion with its lengthy drink menu and reliable pub-style feeds. Play some pool, or get comfortable on the couches with $8 happy hour tap beer favourites, Monday to Friday, 5.30 to 6.30pm.
Happy hour: Every Friday and Saturday, 4.30pm–5.30pm
During The Wolf’s Hour at this clandestine CBD hideaway, beer, wine and spirits are $7 and a handful of cocktails are $12 – plus, every drink comes with a bowl of housemade popcorn. Leave the office early and start the weekend on a budget-friendly note. Every second Friday also sees a soundtrack of old-school hip-hop served up alongside $10 gin and juices. And, on Saturdays, happy hour patrons can hang around to hear DJ Philly blunt from 7.30pm.
Happy hour: Fri, 4pm–6pm
If you’re not a Guildford local, this one is worth the trek. The fully restored building has architectural elements to keep you occupied for days, ample seating options and surprisingly tasty weird snacks like Cheese Burger Spring Rolls. Its version of happy hour is all about supporting local. Every Friday from 4pm there are $9 pints from the Community Keg featuring a locally brewed supplier, and 100 per cent of profits are donated to a local cause. There’s also Little Creatures, White Rabbit, Feral and more in their copper taps.
Happy hour: Wed to Fri, 5pm–6pm
Everyone has an old faithful; a place that never disappoints, is perfect for meeting friends or family, and has a killer kitchen to accompany a trustworthy drinks menu. That, for many, is Mount Lawley local Clarences. The small bar runs happy hour between 5pm and 6pm, Wednesday through Friday, with $6 schnooers (craft beer and boutique wines are their specialty). Clarences’s cheeseburger has a good rap for good reason, but if you're after something smaller there's also a great charcuterie and cheese section. Or just go for some skewered octopus, king prawns with romesco, or mushroom pate.
