Bac Pham’s name is constantly mentioned among the best young chefs in WA. After cooking at Rockpool and Petition, Pham opened North 54, his first venue, last year. In February, he added a dinner service. Basically, it’s been a big year for Pham.

Although he’s spent a lot of the year churning out banh mi, pad krapow clams and stracciatella ca tim kho nam xo, he still finds time to get out and about.

Here are Pham’s favourite restaurants, bars and cafes in Perth.

Your favourite dish at North 54

“My favourite banh mi would be the son-in-law egg roll. It’s super underrated but so delicious. It hits the spot every time. On the dinner menu, my go-to dish is the com tam with the grilled pork neck. It’s one of the most-ordered dishes, other than the bun bo hue. It’s just super tasty.”

The best thing you’ve eaten in WA this year (so far)

“The Skull Island prawns with sesame sambal at Jacob D’Vauz and Anisha Halik’s pop-up Magnolia BBQ. I can’t wait till they reopen!”

Your go-to for a quick takeaway

“Uncle Lam’s in Coventry Village. It’s fast, efficient and filling.”

A late-night venue for a snack or nightcap

“China Bar in Northbridge. It really hits the spot. It’s my go-to for a post-service feed with my wife.”

Somewhere you think deserves more hype

“Ongrill in Northbridge. It’s a Korean joint. The build-your-own bulgogi bowl is so damn good. Y’all need to try it.”

A date spot or romantic venue

“It’s Casa in Mount Hawthorn. Good company and a good wine list – the perfect combo.”

“Gelato Bam Bam in Freo is a favourite of mine.”

Best dumpling spot or yum cha

“I can’t go past Northbridge Chinese Restaurant when it comes to yum cha.”

A bucket list venue that you’d love to visit

“I would love to go to Night & Market Song in LA. It’s a really casual and colourful Thai joint. It’s right up my alley for some fun food and drinks.”

Your favourite kitchen appliance

“I love my Cuckoo rice cooker. The rice just comes out so fluffy every time.”
