Royal’s Chicken and Burgers continues to be a Perth success story. With stores in Vic Park, Wembley and Northbridge – and not forgetting the outstanding Lola’s Grilled Chicken in Thornlie – brothers Al and Ken Craigie have now given Royal’s a little brother. Enter Baby Roy’s in the Melville Shopping Plaza.
“The whole idea is that it’s more shopping-centre friendly,” says Al. “Royal’s is such a hard thing to recreate because of the culture and everything we’ve built in. But the demand is definitely out there.”
Baby Roy’s offers a new and smaller menu than Royals does, featuring In-N-Out-style burgers (the famous US-based burger chain), hoagies (submarine-style sandwiches), beef chilli and waffle fries. Burgers start at $8.50, with the meal size and price point designed so that diners can choose a few items.
“I didn’t think Al could take the Royal’s burger to another level,” says Ken. “But he did it in a very different way. The Royal’s burger by comparison is much more boutique. But the simplicity and the comfort that comes with the Baby Roy’s burgers is next level.”
Burger options start with the simple Baby Roy and go up to the double bacon cheeseburger adorned with queso cheese. Hoagie options include a chilli beef dog and a Philly cheese steak. Soft serve and shakes will be available shortly after opening.
The brothers describe Baby Roy’s as a “cookie cutter” version of Royal’s which will be easier to roll out. Al believes the Perth burger market still has room to grow, especially in the northern suburbs.
“I think we’re getting saturated in the southern and central city areas,” he says. “There’s times when you think there’s just too many burger joints, but at the same time they all do things slightly differently. People that really love burgers want a little bit of variety.”
Plans are already underway to continue the expansion of the Royal’s brand across the state and overseas.
Baby Roy’s opens on Friday November 30. Burgers will be 30 per cent off on opening night, with live music and DJs from 6pm.
