Aurelio Costarella has had a busy 12 months. In addition to opening his new flagship boutique at the State Buildings in November last year, the Perth designer has just released Natura, his new autumn-winter collection inspired by architecture and nature.
“I have taken elements from both and fused them in a multilayered collection,” says Costarella. “We are showing lots of black and white with a feature graphic Deco print that I designed specifically for the collection.”
Renowned for his intricate beading and flawless silhouettes, Costarella’s latest collection exudes elegance with statement detailing and an emphasis on colour.
“In terms of colour we are showing sharp black-and-white contrast, berry, teal and soft pink tones along with metallic pewter,” says Costarella. “Embellishments, beading and embroidery feature strongly on both delicate and glamorous interpretations of the theme.”
Costarella’s interest in architecture also informed his decision to open in the redeveloped State Buildings. Although he had been following the buildings’ makeover for some time, it was a site walk-through in 2015 that sealed the deal.
“I had always admired the old Treasury building,” says Costarella. “My background in architecture has given me a strong appreciation of buildings, both historic and contemporary. Sadly we have a history in Perth of tearing down beautiful old buildings to make way for ‘progress’. The space has given me the opportunity to create the gallery-like space I was hoping for. I wanted a European vibe and I feel that we have certainly achieved that.”
While Perth is the only city with an Aurelio Costarella boutique, the designer hopes to expand over east before the year is out.
“We have a strong and faithful Melbourne customer base,” says Costarella. “Once the right space becomes available we will make our move.”
