When I was nine, a boy I liked asked me who was my favourite band. Confident we were destined to marry, I replied “Crowded House.” He had no idea who they were. I was shocked. How could he not know Crowded House? Neil Finn? I knew then he wasn’t husband material.
Over his career, Neil Finn has contributed plenty of iconic songs to the Antipodean song book including “I Got You” (Split Enz), “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, “Distant Sun” and “Better Be Home Soon” (Crowded House). His songs have lasted the test of time, played to generations of music-lovers and still going strong. I have my parents to thank for my extensive knowledge of Crowded House’s 1996 album, Recurring Dream: it was on repeat for the majority of my childhood.
Finn is kicking off the Port Beach Weekender four-day music festival and will play old favourites and new tunes for the Sundown Sessions on Thursday March 9.
“It’s not often you get to witness an artist of this calibre in a boutique environment and we’re so excited for our guests to be a part of it,” says Andrew Bailey of Offworld Productions.
I’ll be front and centre.
The Port Beach Weekender is at Port Beach, Fremantle, and begins Thursday March 9. Tickets are available online.
