The simple things in life, to paraphrase a famous Australian commercial, are often the best. And so it is at Rooftop Movies, an open-air cinema atop a Northbridge car park that takes full advantage of Perth’s balmy summer evenings. There’s a bar. There’s wood-fired sustenance from Dough Pizza. There’s a candy bar stocking all the major multiplex food groups (chips, popcorn, ice-cream). But most of all, there’s a healthy smattering of cult classics among the cinema’s program of new-release screenings. Here are some of the video-store favourites we’re looking forward to watching over summer.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Friday December 16)
Even three decades after release, Ferris Bueller remains one of the coolest kids to grace the big screen. The soundtrack is fun, the glasshouse that features throughout is an architect’s dream, plus there’s also that convertible Ferrari.

Edward Scissorhands (Tuesday December 20)
Not your everyday romantic fantasy, but that’s to be expected from a movie starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton. And did we mention Depp stars alongside his then-girlfriend Winona Ryder? The ultimate ‘90s movie.

The Princess Bride (Wednesday December 28)
A winning blend of romance, wit and adventure, The Princess Bride is a childhood fairy tale that’s enjoyed by young and old, men and women alike. As you wish.

The Breakfast Club (Sunday January 1)
The classic ‘80s flick where the kids are too cool for school and get up to no good while stuck in detention on a Saturday.

Rooftop Movies is at 68 James Street, Northbridge. Its season runs till March 11, 2017. Movies screen Tuesday to Sunday. Tickets are $13 plus $3 booking fee and available online.
