Going to Falls this year? Be prepared to make some tough music-listening decisions. The national art and music festival’s line-up is brimming with musical talent from all corners and genres.

The announcement of definitive “slashie” Childish Gambino as headliner earlier in the year set the bar high for today’s announcement. The rest of the bill delivers on that promise. In addition to a catalogue of hit singles including Strong and Hey Now, UK indie rockers London Grammar will be performing new material that the band describes as a mix “between Pocahontas and Fleetwood Mac”.

Grandmaster Flash of The Message and Adventures on the Wheels of Steel fame will bring hip-hop history to proceedings. Perth beatsmith Ta-Ku, recently returned from a North American tour, will be representing the genre’s future.

Melbourne-based electronic outfit The Avalanches are another notable addition to the line-up, not least following the release of Wildflower, the band’s much-anticipated follow-up to their ground-breaking 2000 debut album, Since I Left You. Other homegrown crowd-delighters include The Jezabels and Queensland rockers Violent Soho and Ball Park Music.

Falls’ organisers are enthusiastic about the festival’s debut in Western Australia.

“Ever since we suggested the idea to the good people at the Fremantle Council, we’ve felt love from the locals for bringing Falls [Downtown] to the West,” says festival co-producer Paul Piticco. “The people of WA have embraced us with open arms and anticipation. We’re working hard to bring a unique version of Falls to Freo and we’re really happy to become a part of the music family over there.”

Additional artists, side shows and food vendors will be announced in the lead-up to each festival.

Falls Downtown takes place across Fremantle on January 7-8 2017. Tickets available online from 9am on August 30.
