Beanies and your thickest jumpers at the ready: this school holidays, the Esplanade Reserve in Fremantle and Sorrento Quay Boardwalk at Hillarys will be transformed into Winterworld Australia

An outdoor ice-skating rink will be the star attraction at both pop-ups, with skating aids and wheelchair accessibility ensuring everyone can join in the fun. Both locations will also feature falling flakes of snow thanks to White Snow, the Australian company best known this side of the country for creating a 30-metre snow slide in Forrest Place in 2015, as well as similar slides in Melbourne and Auckland.

The size of the Esplanade means Fremantle gets the bigger rink, but the payoff for visitors to the north-of-the-river Winterworld is ocean views as they skate above the quay.

Other winter activities include a snow pit for building snowmen and snowball fights in Fremantle, an ice toboggan and giant slide. Marshmallow-roasting, mulled wine and other cold-weather treats will also be available, with businesses on the Hillarys boardwalk offering wintry specials.

Winterworld runs at Esplanade Park (Marine Terrace, Fremantle) and Sorrento Quay (58 Southside Drive, Hillarys) from 8.30am to 9pm, Sunday to Thursday June 24 – July 16. Tickets available online.
