Did you hear the one about the comedian that built a three-million-dollar comedy venue on top of an Italian restaurant in Perth’s west end? The name of the funnyman is John McAllister and the club is Comedy Lounge Perth, a purpose-built space that its owner says is the first of its kind in Australia.

“We’ve picked the best elements of New York and London’s famous comedy clubs to bring Perth a specialty entertainment venue to match the world-class comedy talent we’ve been proud to present and help produce,” says McAllister, a long-time figure in the local comedy scene.

On paper, the club sounds like an ideal venue for both comedians and fans. High quality sound and lighting aside, thoughtful design means each of the 200 seats is a well-aimed rotten tomato’s throw from the stage.

The lounge will host live comedy Thursday to Saturday each week with regular segments including Six In The City (a fast-paced hour-long show featuring six comedians and $6 drink specials), the cabaret styling of DIVAS all-male revue, and Gong Time, a Red Faces-style show that gives comics three minutes on stage before being getting the Red Symonds treatment.

To celebrate Comedy Lounge Perth’s opening, the Steve Frost Improv All Stars (the original stars of the English Whose Line Is It Anyway?) and Australian comic Peter Rowsthorn (Kath & Kim, The Comedy Company) will be performing.

Comedy Lounge Perth opens Thursday November 23. Tickets to events are available online.
