Homey. No other word better describes Alder & Co.

Chalk it up to the smell of freshly baked cookies mixed with just-ground coffee, the sound of neighbours greeting each other across the cafe din or the sight of the dogs sprawled and panting outside.

Dark hardwood floors and exposed-brick walls are softened by bright bouquets of flowers from neighbouring business, Floral Army. Owner Lisa Walsh is the smiling face behind the register. She named her cafe after her grandmother, who was a business owner in the 1940s.

Lisa’s own entrepreneurial journey began with Cookie Dough Biscuits, a business that began with a stall at local markets and has since grown into two cafes and an ever-expanding range of biscuit flavours. Mud Pie – a sprinkle-topped Dutch chocolate bikkie – remains the most popular.

A cup of Di Bella coffee and a cookie might be the default order, but the cafe also offers a full breakfast and lunch menu for larger appetites (house-made salads, sandwiches and the like), along with Top Dup donuts on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Grandma Alder’s career spanned 50 years. Here’s hoping Lisa’s does too.
