UWA students waited more than a century for a decent local. Varsity is their saviour.

Students wagging next morning’s lectures gather here on a nightly basis. Maybe crowds are drawn in by the sounds of pool balls clacking, a competitive game of table tennis or bantering sports fans.

It could be the festive atmosphere brought about by themed nights such as Pizza Mondays, Wing Tuesdays, or Nacho Wednesdays. It’s the sort of loud but welcoming joy that draws in passers-by.

Before sunset, Varsity appeals in a different way. Its shift from wild nights to chilled days is stark. In fact, nearby residents who lodge noise complaints towards midnight are probably the same people who spend the afternoon lounging in a corner couch shooting the breeze over a pint.

Beer choices include local legend Little Creatures, as well as the United States’ finest: Sierra Nevada. Food is unashamedly American.

Monstrosities such as the meaty carb madness of the Chilli Fries, and the sweet ‘n’ savoury one-two of a Chicken Waffle Sandwich, never fail to satisfy. The burgers are some of Perth’s best. Look out for special lunch deals, too.
