“Prego”. A beaming smile. An escort to your table. The trademarks of a welcome at a restaurant in Italy are intact at Claremont’s Lucioli.
Father and son Salvatore and Luca Lucioli have drawn inspiration from the homeland for their warm service. Tradition also drives their menu.
Lucioli’s house-made pastas, pizzas and pastries would be welcome on any menu in Italy. Fettucine bolognese is done the traditional way, blending veal and pork mince and cooked at length to maximise the richness of the sauce.
Simple mains hold their own, too, with agrodolce pork and veal meatballs striking a balance between sweet and sour, served on a bed of grilled polenta. The polenta chips are a fiver. The portions are large, so bring company.
The pastry display is the sort that makes leaving room for dessert worthwhile; tiramisus, madeleines, cornetti and cheesecakes. Cakes can also be ordered ahead and purchased whole to make an impression at a party.
The wine list has a strong selection of Italian reds, whites and proseccos, filled out by Australian and French drops.
