Over the past 24 months, much of the activity in Perth’s hotel industry has taken place at the luxury end of the market. Most notably, the opening of COMO The Treasury in late 2015, and the unveiling of a local Crown Towers spin-off in December. The next big development in accommodation is somewhat more accessible.

Meet TRIBE, a new Australian hotel brand, pitched towards urban explorers and business travellers, that offers streamlined, competitively priced rooms that favour functionality over frills. One of its selling points is the use of modular design and pre-fabricated rooms to keep building costs and hotel room rates down. The group’s first hotel – the 126-room, nine-storey TRIBE Perth – opens in mid-May.

“The contemporary traveller no longer checks into a hotel, they check into a destination,” says founder Mark Peters. “When we created TRIBE, we re-evaluated the hotel model to prioritise the benefits they would want.”

Melbourne-based architecture firm Idle Architecture Studio and interior designer Travis Walton are responsible for the hotel’s pared-back look. Smart TVs, Bluetooth radios, free wi-fi and integrated storage solutions tick all the travel-mod-con boxes. Chairs from Italian furniture designer Moroso, and original artwork from contemporary Australia artists, feature throughout the hotel.

Jamie Oliver collaborator Tobie Puttock will oversee the menu at TRIBE Foods, the hotel’s in-house eatery that operates as a cafe by day and a bar by night.

For its first location, TRIBE has chosen to hang its shingle in West Perth. From here, guests will be in striking distance of Kings Park, the CBD and Subiaco Oval. Following the launch of TRIBE Perth, sites will open in Adelaide, Hobart and Melbourne.

TRIBE Perth is at 4 Walker Avenue, West Perth and opens on May 16. Rooms start from $199 per night.
